Archeological Services in Support of Clearing and Stabilization Activities at the San Fernando Bastion in San Juan National Historic Site, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Ottery Group conducted archeological services in support of vegetation clearing and stabilization of the cliff at the San Fernando Bastion in San Juan National Historic Site (SAJU) in Puerto Rico.
The fortification system is the oldest European construction under United States jurisdiction and one of the oldest in the New World. The national historic site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The stabilization effort was designed to stabilize the cliff at San Fernando Bastion, which forms part of the foundation and support for the Castillo’s esplanade.
The project was designed to assist with obligations under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and is managed by the Army Corps of Engineers via an Inter-Agency Agreement with the National Park Service.
